For years now, workers and their Unions have been under attack by a number of different initiatives that have been introduced by “right wing extremists” in State Houses and in Congress. Theses initiatives are meant to strip away worker’s rights.  This so called “Right to Work for Less” is just one of those initiatives. So far this year 13 states have introduced “right to work” legislation.

It has been proven that “right to work for less” laws don’t give workers more rights but actually weakens their union’s ability to represent union members in contract negotiations. In states where such laws exist, wages and benefits of employees are generally lower than in states without “right to work” laws.

Further, collective bargaining agreements do not have Union Security clauses whereby workers agree to pay their share of the cost to maintain their union.  As a result, freeloaders are allowed to receive all the benefits of a collective bargaining agreement while ducking any financial obligation to the union and the members that fought and paid for those benefits. Ultimately, unions become financially drained and along with it the ability to represent their member’s needs are diminished.

Legislators have been known in the past to tell workers that “Right to Work” laws are good for them. But we think Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States put it best more than fifty years ago when he said “You will find some people saying that they are for the so-called ‘right to work’ law, but also believe in unions.  This is absurd – it’s like saying you are for motherhood but against children.”

We need your help!  Below is a list of those states where “Right to Work” legislation has been introduced. If your state is listed, please contact your state representative and ask them to oppose any legislation that would weaken your collective bargaining rights and vote “NO” on any “right to work” legislation.
